Trailer Tires in Oklahoma City, OK

Trailer tires usually fail from age, not tread wear — a boat, utility, or livestock trailer towed only a few times a year can sit long enough for sidewall rubber to dry-crack and let go while the tread still looks new. Oklahoma City Tire Shop checks trailer tires for that before a trip, not just for depth.

A trailer tire rarely wears out in the way a car tire does. It sits in a driveway or a storage lot most of the year, gets loaded up a handful of times, and the tread on it can still look close to new the day it fails — because what killed it wasn't miles, it was sun and time working through the sidewall rubber from the outside in. ST-rated tires are built with a lighter sidewall than a passenger tire's to begin with, since they're not meant to steer or brake, and that lighter construction is exactly what makes them less forgiving of dry rot.

On a tandem-axle trailer, a mismatched pair — one tire worn or aged down more than the one next to it — scrubs against the pavement instead of rolling clean, and that shows up as sway at highway speed well before either tire looks obviously bad on its own.

How do I know if a trailer tire is too old to trust?

The DOT date code stamped into the sidewall is the place to start — a four-digit code giving the week and year the tire was built, and it doesn't care how many miles are on the trailer. Past that, the check is visual: spider-web cracking around the sidewall, any bulge or flat spot from sitting loaded in one position, and tread depth measured the same as any other tire, just weighted less heavily than the age and sidewall condition.

When's the actual right time to get trailer tires checked?

Before the trip, not during it. Saturday hours run 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, which lines up with when most trailer prep actually happens — the day before someone hooks up a boat or hauls livestock for the weekend, not the Tuesday after something's already gone wrong on the highway.

My trailer tire tread still looks fine — why replace it?

Because tread depth isn't what's failing on most trailer tires. Age and sun exposure crack the sidewall rubber from the outside long before the tread wears down, and a tire that looks fine on top can still be one hot highway mile from a blowout underneath.

Do trailer tires need to match on each axle?

On a tandem axle, yes. A pair with different diameters from mismatched wear or age scrubs against the road instead of rolling together, which shows up as trailer sway before it shows up as a flat.

How often should I get trailer tires checked if the trailer barely gets used?

Before every towing season at minimum, and before any trip longer than a quick local haul. Low mileage doesn't slow down sidewall aging, so a trailer that only comes out twice a year needs the same age check as one that's on the road every week.
